Will Plastic Surgery Boost Self-Esteem?

confidence

I think its pretty well understood that true self confidence, the kind of confidence that helps us all reach our goals, persevere through the difficult times, and stand the test of time, comes from within. This cannot be overstated. With that said, I also think its no secret that how we look definitely has an impact on how we feel, how we see ourselves, how others see us, and ultimately our self esteem and self image.

But don’t take my word for it, lets think about our own life and the world around us. When a woman decides she’s going out for the night with her girlfriends, does she put on a sweatshirt and sweat pants? Of course not, she goes into her closet and puts on the hottest outfit she can find. Why? She wants to feel beautiful and sexy, and of course when she feels sexy, she becomes sexy, she embodies confidence, she is confidence. Or how about this same woman on a Monday, getting ready for a meeting with a potentially huge client. Does she go to work in jeans and sneakers? No, she wears her best power suit. She wants to feel smart and powerful, and of course when she feels powerful, she becomes power, she embodies confidence, she is confidence.

So there’s an interesting relationship between the confidence that comes from within, and the confidence that comes from with out. The difference between our clothes and plastic surgery should be pretty apparent. At the end of the day, we take off our clothes and get back to our “normal” levels of confidence. Plastic Surgery however is more permanent. When we go to bed, there it is, and when we wake up, its still there. It’s the confidence booster that lasts longer than any change of clothes would do. Just imagine that; always feeling like you’re in that sexy dress, or that custom power suit! What a difference that could make. Morrison Plastic Surgery is here to be that difference.

Plastic Surgery Myths: A Game of True or False

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

A Game of True or False

1a. I’m afraid to get plastic surgery on my face because I’ll look like the Lion Lady (Jocelyn Wildenstein)

False: The Lion Lady is an extremely, extreme case! She is rumored to have spent over $4,000,00 in plastic surgeries which means possibly hundreds of operations. There is no way any Board Certified Plastic Surgeon worth his salt would participate in something like this. We have done thousands of surgeries over the past 20 years, and have never had any issues or results of this nature.

1b. Cosmetic surgeons and Plastic surgeons are all the same.

False: All plastic surgeons do not have the same levels of training. Doctors like Dr. Norman Morrison, who report to be Board Certified in Plastic Surgery, have undergone years of specific training related to all nuances of cosmetic and plastic surgery. They are also members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

2. The only people who undergo plastic surgery are Celebrities

False: Logically this can’t be true. Celebrities make up maybe 1% of the total population. An industry can’t survive on those kind of numbers. Although we have worked with some Celebrities, Morrison Plastic Surgery is all about you and me, the everyday person. People like you and I who want to improve our appearance, self confidence, and lives. At the end of the day, we all just want to be happy right?

3. Only women get Plastic Surgery

False: Nope! Now don’t get me wrong, women do indeed make up a larger percent of our client base. However, we do have men who come in for procedures as well. Some men even participate in less invasive procedures like Botox and Dermal features.

4. Plastic Surgery is all about Beauty and Vanity

False: No way jose! We have many women who come to us who are cancer survivors who need post-cancer breast reconstruction. Plastic surgery also helps with birth defects such as cleft palates as well as help repair work-related injuries.

5. Morrison Plastic Surgery and Dr. Norman Morrison can help me with my Plastic Surgery needs

True: Yes, we are indeed awesome, but don’t just take our word for it… Find out for yourself by booking a consultation!

Our Nose and the Perception of Beauty

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Our Noses! They’re funny things aren’t they? We don’t think much about it on a day-to-day basis, but we use it all the time. It’s right smack dab in the middle of our faces, literally in our line of sight, but we seem never to notice it at all as we go about our business. In today’s standards, our noses seem to have a big impact on our perception of beauty. A quote from a fellow surgeon states: “The nose is the most prominent and protruding part of the human face, so it’s immediately noticed.”

Here are some interesting facts about our nose:

  • Women have stronger senses of smell than men
  • A man’s nose reaches its full size between the ages of 17-19, and for women it’s between 15-17
  • Rhinoplasty (or a nose job) is one of the top 5 cosmetic surgery procedures

So what is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that aims to improve the appearance and proportion of our noses, enhancing facial harmony and/or correcting impaired breathing or structural abnormalities.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

  • We can change the size of our nose, width, position, and profile
  • We can fix and injured nose
  • We can correct breathing Difficulties
  • We can help create facial and nasal symmetry which can significantly improve self confidence

At Morrison Plastic Surgery we have been providing this service for the African American and Hispanic community for over 20 years. If you are a part of this community and are interested but don’t want to lose your natural and beautiful ethnic features, don’t worry. Dr. Norman Morrison can add symmetry without losing the features that make you, you!

MPS Tips and Tricks for Post- Surgical Repair!

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

What do we do to repair the body after surgery?

So, we’ve made it through the hard part! The search for the doctor who bests suits us is over, the consults are done, decisions have been made, the big day has come and gone, and now we are recuperating. We may be experiencing some discomfort, we know the medication is helping, but it may also be making us nauseous. So what are our options? What do we eat? What do we drink?

Most of us, whether we have had surgery or not, probably have not been eating properly in the first place, so what do we do? First things first, in the days following the surgery we are probably not in the mood to eat, so we should be drinking lots of water. Coconut water is excellent along with low salt light soups.

There could be some vomiting, a loss of appetite, or a very little desire to eat. In these cases try yogurt, greek yogurt, protein shakes and protein drinks instead of meals. Eat simple meals such as chicken with vegetable broth after surgery. Our bodies need their fair share of protein to repair cells, fight infection, and heal incisions.

As the days go by we will need to eat lots of restorative foods. Our bodies need to rest and repair itself, so getting lots of rest and sleep is key. If you feel the need to snack, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds are a good way to go. Breakfast can be eggs, fortified orange juice or fortified cereal. Include lots of fruits like cantaloupe, papaya, oranges, mangoes, strawberry and kiwi. Our veggies should definitely include lots of spinach, broccoli, bell peppers and beans. If eating fruits and veggies seems like a bit too much. Making fruit/veggie smoothies using a blender like Nutribullet or Vitamix can be a great way to take in large quantities of fruits and veggies without eating them all day!

Of course remember portion amounts counts! It is great to retrain the body to take in smaller amounts and now is a great opportunity and time to start!

The Great Debate: Butt Implants vs. The Brazilian Butt Lift

VN:F [1.9.22_1171]
Rating: 0.0/5 (0 votes cast)

Written by: Philip Morrison, Director of Sales

The great debate: Butt Implants vs The Brazilian Butt Lift. We get tons of inquiries from prospective patients asking which one is the best. So we here at Morrison Plastic Surgery decided to shed some light on the subject for all the prospective women looking to enhance their beautiful derriere’s.

So whats the answer? The quick and dirty answer is, the Brazilian Butt lift wins hands down!

Why, you ask? No problem, here’s the skinny (no pun intended) :-)

Why Implants are Bad

  1. Implants are a foreign substance: Because implants are a foreign substance there’s a greater chance they will be rejected by the body which can create serious complications and cause for the removal of the implants. With the Brazilian Butt lift, we use our own fat to do the enhancing and since the fat comes from our own bodies, there’s a 0% chance of the body rejecting it.
  2. Implants don’t pass the feel test: It’s well known that implants just don’t feel as natural as the real deal, and by real deal we mean our own fat. A good percentage of our booty’s are made up of, well, pure fat. So using fat seems to make the most sense.
  3. Implants can become very  uncomfortable: Think about it this way, you are putting two foreign, solid objects inside of your buttocks. It’s only natural that as you are sitting or lying down, you’ll notice it and may even feel it moving around. With the Brazilian Butt Lift, the fat that is used, naturally takes on the characteristics of where it is being injected so it will better assimilate to its new environment and behave as it should.

Other Facts Specific to the Brazilian Butt Lift

  1. As discussed in a prior blog the fat used to enhance the shape is taken from our own bodies, usually belly, flanks, arms, thighs, etc… So with this you get added body shaping and contouring that will add to the look of your new butt.
  2. Minimal Scarring
  3. Shorter Recovery period
  4. Less chance of infection and side effects
  5. Better look and feel

At Morrison Plastic Surgery, Dr. Norman Morrison does not use butt implants due to the amount of possible complications, side effects, and all the reasons discussed above. Feel free to contact your friends here at Morrison Plastic Surgery for more info!

Brazilian Butt Lift: Your Questions Answered!

The Brazilian Butt Lift: Your Questions Answered

By: Philip Morrison, Director of Sales

The Brazilian Butt Lift! What can we say, it’s a very hot procedure these days with women from all walks of life inquiring about it. At Morrison Plastic Surgery we get tons of inquiries and have actually beat our initial estimates on how many we thought we would do this year (it’s only October and have a few months to go :-) ! So we figured since its one of our top rated procedures we would talk a bit about it and how we perform this service.

For those who don’t know, what exactly is a Brazilian Butt Lift? To put it simply the Brazilian Butt Lift is a butt augmentation that uses the fat from our own body and places it in our buttocks. In essence that’s really what it is. Liposuction is done to selectively remove fat from certain areas of the body: abdomen, waist, love handles, back, thighs, arms, etc… basically any place where the body has extra fatty tissue.  This fat is then separated from the blood and purified to then be injected, to permanently sculpt and enlarge the buttocks. After the surgery, we sometimes have our patients wear a garment that helps reduce swelling, and maintain the shape of your new and improved buttock!

So, what’s the end result? Good question. Your new Brazilian Butt Lift will leave you with a smaller waist and a larger, more shapely butt that will have you feeling confident and have others wondering what’s so different about you! You will have a more contoured shape that will accentuate all your new curves!

Here are some answers to some often asked questions:

Q: What is the rate?

A: It all depends. The fact is that each of you are unique. You have different body types and have different expectations. As discussed above, the Brazilian Lift is actually 2 different procedures: Liposuction and Butt Augmentation. Because of this, it can be a very time consuming procedure (as much as 5 hours) and requires artistry in how it is executed for best results. For this reason, it is very hard to say what the price will be before a consultation is had. The sooner you come in for a consultation, the sooner we (you and Morrison Plastic Surgery) will know how much it will be.

Q: If I’m really skinny, can I do this procedure?

A: It all depends. As stated above the procedure uses fat from own bodies so if we don’t have much fat on our bodies there won’t be much to use for sculpting purposes. Again, the only way to know for sure is for you to come in for a consultation and speak with Dr. Norman Morrison.

Q: Can I use someone else’s fat?

A: No. That’s all there is to it, using the fat from someone else is just plain unsafe.

Q: Does Morrison Plastic Surgery use implants?

A: No. The use of implants carries a great deal of risk in terms of complications (and just doesn’t look as natural). It is a method we don’t use at Morrison Plastic Surgery.

Part 2: Facial Fillers or Botox Injections, is there a clear winner?

The difference between Facial Fillers and Botox Injections?

Part 2: Facial Fillers or Botox Injections, is there a clear winner?

In Part 1 of this installment we discussed what facial fillers and botox injections actually are, and how they aim to solve the problem of unwanted wrinkles and sagging older looking skin. Understanding both methods is the first step in trying to decide which solution would be best for you. Now that we understand both, let’s dive into the real question here: Is one better than the other?

When using Botox

  • Wrinkles in troubled areas will become smoother.
  • Through consistent use of Botox, the worsening or deepening of lines and wrinkles will be prevented due to the fact that the muscles that are used to create them are temporarily relaxed. In other words, the less you are actually able to frown, the less likely frown lines will set in more deeply.
  • Procedure doesn’t take very long at all with some treatments being as short as only 10 minutes or so.
  • Much less costly and invasive than a traditional facelift.

While there are many positive reasons to choose Botox, it is important to note that it’s effects are not permanent. Botox injections last around 3-4 months so you will have to make multiple visits to your doctor throughout the year in order to maintain your younger look.

When Using Fillers

  • Injectable fillers will give you a more youthful look due to the volume and fullness they create by plumping and lifting troubled areas.
  • Lines and wrinkles will seemingly disappear because the injectable materials will fill the line or crease.
  • Studies have shown that Hyaluronic Acid assists in the creation of new collagen and this new collagen helps decrease the appearance of facial creases and wrinkles.
  • Much less costly and invasive than a traditional facelift

Similar to Botox, there are some things to consider. Facial fillers are foreign substances being introduced to the body so allergic reactions are something to be mindful of. Consult with your Plastic Surgeon and disclose any allergies you have. Aside from allergic reactions, fillers also have risks of lumping and migration although this happens infrequently. On the other hand, because the results last a short period of time, so do the potential problems. It is important to note that not all wrinkles and creases are created equally and neither are the treatments used to remove them. For this reason, there is no clear cut winner between the two methods. Choosing which method is best for each particular patient is the job of your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. This article will give you a basic understanding of botox and facial fillers however your Plastic Surgeon should have the last word. Feel free to contact your friends here at Morrison Plastic Surgery for more info.

Do You Consider Yourself Attractive? Find Out Why You Should!

“Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good”

A saying that we’ve all heard a few times before, floating around social media, TV, friends/family and generally in society. In today’s society for better or for worse we place a great deal of value on how we look. Even though how we look is a very, very small piece of the complex puzzle that makes up you and I, improving our physical appearance seems to take up a significant amount of our time and money. We buy nice clothes, spend lots of time at the gym, maintain strict diets, spend time and money at the beauty/nail salons, and spend a great deal of effort looking for the highest quality makeup, lotions, and creams to help us look as best we can. The fact is: When we see someone for the first time, the first thing we notice is what he or she looks like; and although we are taught at a young age not to judge a book by its cover, we do it anyway.

It’s pretty well known, with some statistics to prove it, that outwardly “attractive” people tend to have higher salaries, have better jobs, and hold higher positions. Is this because if you are perceived to be attractive you feel more confident? Is it because it’s human nature to help those or give in to the demands of those we are attracted to or consider attractive? I don’t think we can say for sure, but I think we can say it’s probably a combination of everything.

Many times how we look can affect how we feel, and how we feel can affect how we look. When it’s the weekend and its time for a night out on the town, we’re feeling great so we get dressed to the 9’s and prepare to paint the city red! How about when we have a big business meeting or interview to go to? What do we do? We get in our best power suit or professional wear to show how we feel inside; we mean business and we’re kicking ass and taking names! So with that said it stands to reason that the following 2 statements hold true:

  1. How we look on the outside can greatly enhance how we feel on the inside
  2. How we feel on the inside will greatly enhance how we look on the outside

Given the above 2 points I think its fair to say that any means of improving our appearance can definitely impact our self esteem and confidence levels. However, lets not forget that the most important part of us is not what’s on the outside but what’s on the inside. With that being said, if you feel as though your appearance is holding back your confidence, you definitely have options. Plastic Surgery can address many of the insecurities you may have and we are here to help!

Understanding Facial Fillers and Botox Injections: Part 1

The difference between Facial Fillers and Botox Injections?

Understanding Facial Fillers and Botox Injections: Part 1

To fully understand the difference between facial fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Botox or Dysport it may be helpful to know what the client’s goal maybe and and how to create the best results!

The problem

I think we all agree the problem is pretty simple and straightforward; unwanted wrinkles and sagging older looking skin. As we age, our skin unfortunately loses its firmness and elasticity. The volume and fullness we once enjoyed in our twenties diminishes, leaving thinner and less supple features. Some of this is due to the loss or breakdown of collagen. Collagen exists naturally in our skin and acts as structural support. Over time collagen breaks down and our skin becomes weaker and thinner leaving wrinkles and sagging areas. Now that we’ve adequately stated the problem lets look at some of the non surgical solutions.

Botox

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into the muscles and used to improve the look of frown lines. It does this by “relaxing” the facial muscles/motions that create wrinkles in your brow, forehead, eyes, and mouth area. As we move our faces, lines will develop and become deeper over time. Botox is injected directly into the muscles to relax the muscles and improve wrinkles. Botox however is not permanent and wears off over time usually lasting about 3 to 4 months before another treatment will be necessary.

Dermal Facial Fillers

Dermal Facial Fillers on the other hand are used to create or enhance facial volume. Fillers are materials injected underneath the skin to make it appear fuller and more plump. After an injection, the skin will show fewer wrinkles and lines and look much younger. Think of fillers as “Volumizers” aiding a helping hand to the collagen we lose over time. Fillers can be used to add volume and shape to our cheeks, chin, lips, jaw line and other areas.  Both Juvederm and Restylane are  two of the more popular Hyaluronic acid fillers currently in the marketplace. Hyaluronic acid is a natural agent found in all living cells that bind with water keeping our skin hydrated as well as giving it volume. Fillers can last up to as long as 1 year before they need to be replaced.

——————

OK, so we know what the problem is, we know what the treatments are, and we know how they do their thing, but what we REALLY care about is what does this mean to US and how does this help US look and feel better about our appearance. Here are Morrison Plastic Surgery, our only concern is making you LOOK and FEEL fantastic. For a more in depth look at the differences between facial fillers and botox injections, stay tuned for “Part 2: Facial Fillers or Botox Injections, is there a winner?”

Here is something you can do to start your day…

Its very simple – Start by drinking a glass of water now.  Go ahead, I will wait…… :-)

Hopefully you will drink a few more cups before the day ends, but this is your starting point.  As many of you already know, Water is the foundation of life! When you meet your required cups of water daily (8 cups minimum), it naturally helps you lose weight, improves your skin texture, flushes out toxins from your body and its definitely cheaper than juice or soda!

Your body simply can not carry out it’s necessary functions for good health without hydration. Sometimes it is hard to find time to drink specialty drinks such as protein shakes or fruit smoothies, but you can definitely sneak water in.  Always try to drink a glass of water before each meal, in between your errands and while you are getting ready for bed.

If you take vitamins, its also good to drink a full glass of water instead of just enough to swallow them down.  After eating salty foods or anything else that promotes dehydration, you can always drink water in order to counter-act the effects.  It so simple but so necessary for you to reach all your fitness goals.  To learn more about daily lifestyle changes that will enhance your surgical results and change your life today, contact us at 212-289-3600 to book a consultation!
